OUR CHAPTER
History
In the spring of 2004, four young women with the vision and the tenacity to charter a chapter in West Memphis, Arkansas, met to formulate a plan of action. The four Sorors were Rubye Johnson, Alfredia Parr, Stephanie Patton, and Sharon Warren. A Round Up was planned for all interested Sorors. At the Round Up, a plan of action for a charter was set in motion. The group met regularly while preparing and applying for a charter. The group named themselves "Simply Red. The officers for Simply Red were President Rubye Johnson, Vice-President Alfredia Hines Part, Secretary De'Angela Graham, Treasurer Natoshia Cornelius, and Chaplain Ernestine Clayton. Simply Red consisted of thirty-six (36) members. To raise funds, Simply Red had a Christmas Ball in December 2004 and they donated personal monies.
After a few setbacks, the West Memphis Area Alumnae Chapter (WMAAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered April 22, 2005, by twenty-four sorors who recognized the dire need to empower, encourage, and educate within their own community. Since then, the chapter has worked tirelessly to implement life enriching programs and projects. Presiding was Regional Director, Marvette Thomas and State Coordinator, Shirley Jacobs. Witnesses were Betty Lacy, Pine Bluff Alumnae Chapter, Pat Moore and Annie Lewis, Memphis Alumnae Chapter, Clarissa Lacy, State Social Action Coordinator, Little Rock Alumnae Chapter and Ozaree Twillie, Forrest City Alumnae Chapter.
The chapter’s outreach efforts have been recognized for Community Advancement at the 52nd National Convention. WMAAC was also recognized for excellence in Chapter Retention and Community Sustainable Programming at the 2016 Arkansas State Summit. In 2015 at the Arkansas State Summit, they received the Innovation and Community Focus Award. Within their own community, they are the recipient of the 2015 Community Service Award from the Xi Rho Chapter of Omega Psi Phi. Evelyn B. Hood was named SWR State of Arkansas Delta Dear of the Year for 2015.
